Lead System Engineer - Air-to-Ground Software Stack

SkyFive is start-up company specialized in inflight connectivity (IFC) based on Air-to-Ground (A2G) technology. SkyFive’s A2G software stack is the underlying enabler for broadband connectivity services for commercial aviation as well as for high-reliability connectivity network services for command and control communication and remote control electrical vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs) in urban air mobility (UAM). SkyFive’s A2G software stack spans SW components running in the aircraft as well as on ground infrastructure in the cloud.

Roles and responsibilities:

As Lead System Engineer - Application Development of A2G Software Stack, you are responsible for managing the feature-oriented technical requirement design, interacting and steering of partners, suppliers and internal teams during implementation and integration across multiple business domains. You demonstrate and hand over the integrated requirements to the internal integration & verification team and the customers for final approval. 

 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Definition and management of technical requirements for A2G software stack based on customer requirements across commercial aviation and urban air mobility business domains
  • All responsibilities of a product owner (including the creation of clear user stories / requirements based on overall system requirements)
  • Contribute to the release planning / backlog definition and reporting
  • Collaborate with multiple internal and external stakeholders (such as product management, system design team, architects, integration & verification, and 3rd party development teams) to define and deliver the product with excellent customer experience
  • Coordinate with other system engineers to define the steps/plans that are needed to deliver the end-to-end implementation and integration of a requirements
  • Lead the execution of the agreed plans and remove upcoming impediments or escalate if it cannot be solved on this level

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience & education
    • Degree in engineering, computer science or a related field
    • 10 years working experience in system engineering or SW development
  • Technical skills:
    • Strong software engineering background
    • Hands-on experience with Software Configuration Management, CI/CD pipelines and Issue tracking tools such as gitlab, JIRA etc.
    • Knowledge and experience of both Agile and Waterfall software development methodologies
    • Knowledge and exposure to cloud technologies like MS Azure, AWS is highly desirable
    • Prior experience with aircraft communication systems (e.g., from commercial or business aviation, helicopters)
    • Solid technical understanding of 4G and 5G mobile networks is a plus

The primary objective of the role is to design and provide connectivity solutions to the Commercial Airline sector globally. This role will ensure robust, resilient and adaptable solutions, within the constraints of aeronautical certification. Driving system design by both hands-on development/assessment of available technologies and relevant design documentation. Ensuring timely and cost-efficient fixes to the SkyFive portfolio of connectivity solutions.

Key Responsibilities include: 

  • Internal Owner of the detailed system design and solution for SkyFive connectivity solutions for commercial aviation
  • Build a small team to ensure the support of such solutions in the production environment (3rd line Support)
  • Foster a Data Driven Decision making, continual improvement, culture to manage the connectivity solutions
  • Creation and documentation of technical requirements specifications and system designs
  • Ensure effective management both technically and commercially of suppliers and customers in conjunction with internal stakeholders
  • Ensure that the solutions are scalable, constructed in a cost-effective manner, to support at least 10,000 aircraft
  • Require significant interaction and coordination with suppliers, product management, test and verification teams as well as the wider SkyFive organization such as, procurement, COO and CTO

  • More than 10 years demonstrable experience in the delivery and management of solutions within the aeronautical connectivity space or an equivalent field 
  • More than 10 years of hands-on demonstrable knowledge of open-source solutions and technologies from a SW development and management perspective with particular focus on continual improvement processes.
  • Experience in working with partners to create ISP solutions for the aeronautical connectivity space

The primary objective of the role is to manage the SkyFive services, using A2G networks around the globe on both Commercial Aircraft (CA) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) to deliver the contractual service level agreements.  This role also encompasses the design and implementation of supporting infrastructure as well as the building of a service support team. This role will also ensure that the end-to-end systems are monitored and incidents with ground, satellite and airborne equipment and software are managed in a timely fashion. 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Build and mature a multi-disciplined organisation to manage SkyFive’s contracted services in an efficient manner
  • Deliver and implement a 24x7 operational management solution 
  • Build and maintain a service operations infrastructure to support the management of SkyFive Services
  • Foster a data driven decision making, continual improvement, culture to manage performance across the team and the contracted managed services 
  • Ensure SkyFive attains and sustains the contracted SLA for the services offered
  • Ensure effective management both technically and commercially of suppliers and customers in conjunction with internal stakeholders
