System Engineer – UAM & Mission Critical Services

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is emerging as a new form of transportation in dense metropolitan areas. Novel electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles will carry people between vertipads with significantly reduced noise and CO2 footprints. Following successful maiden flights, local ecosystems are shaping up in early-adopter cities worldwide.

 

Highly reliable connectivity is a key enabler of safe and efficient eVTOL operations in urban airspaces. City-wide Air-to-Ground (A2G) networks will provide coverage and capacity in the lower airspace and at vertipads. Connectivity must be seamlessly integrated into the architecture of weight-constrained eVTOL vehicles to meet stringent flight safety requirements.

As system engineer, you will be involved in all stages of product lifecycle from initial capture of customer requirements through development and finally, deployment to the customer. Within the IVVQ (integration, validation, verification and qualification) phase, the system engineer will develop, author, plan, and execute test requirements, success criteria, and use case analysis to develop test cases.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Produce and maintain UAM product system specifications and interface control documents (ICD)& concept of operations (CONOPS)
  • Analyze the system/subsystem specification (SSS) requirements to determine required features/modifications to the hardware and software
  • Analyze new situations, formulate new ideas and generate requirements with sufficient detail to start a new design and solve complex problems
  • Perform design reviews with internal and external stakeholders
  • Creates, defines, analyses, test success criteria, use case analysis, test case definition, author test procedures, conduct integration, verification and qualification tests, record test results and author test reports
  • Apply knowledge of hardware, software and network technologies to generate highly innovative, cost effective, system-level design solutions
  • Support cost estimation and Statement of Work (SOW) development
  • Provide regular status reports to the project manager and/or product lead
  • Interface to 3rd party sub-system supplier 

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience (Master’s degree is a plus)
  • Experience with aircraft communication systems (e.g. from commercial aircraft or helicopters)
  • Solid technical understanding of 4G and 5G mobile networks
  • Experience with electrical hardware design
  • Proficient in the use of issue tracking software (e.g. Jira)
  • Proficient in the use of requirement management tools (e.g. WINDCHILL)
  • Agility to work in a highly dynamic startup environment
  • Fluent communications in English, in oral and written forms (German is a plus)
  • Self-motivated, critical thinker with strong curiosity to learn
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with interfacing directly with end customers
  • Ability to read and update schematics
  • Must be self-starter and motivated to work in a fast-paced environment

 

 

Preferred Qualification (as a plus):

  • Experience in the domain of Radio Frequency [RF] signal electronics and antennas, including in hardware, firmware and software Integration, Validation, Verification and Qualification (IVVQ) test environments.
  • Experience in the domain of air traffic management will be a plus
  • Mechanical knowledge, AutoCAD
  • Experience with DOD and/or FAA, EASA Programs

Working Student / Internship / thesis 5G Air-to-Ground research and technology

SkyFive AG is seeking highly talented & motivated working students/ interns to join our research and technology activities in Stuttgart, Germany. You will be part of a research team working on latest 5G technology for providing broadband connectivity to aircraft. You will have the opportunity to gain excellent experience in a fast-growing flexible start-up environment on cutting-edge research and technology tasks.

 

Your Tasks:

  • Perform research and further evolve of our existing system-level simulation tool for 5G A2G analysis
  • Define, implement, run and analyze 5G ATG system-level simulations for different network topologies and air-traffic models
  • Analyze and document results based on the system simulations
  • Propose innovative solutions to optimize the system-level performance
  • Analyze 5G technology and its implementation from 3GPP standards to vendor devices

 

Requirements:

  • Studying electrical/software engineering or similar courses with a focus on wireless communications
  • Experience in MATLAB and/or C and/or other object-oriented programming languages
  • Preferably, experience with system simulator development and performance analysis
  • Familiarity with the 4G/5G PHY-layer framework in 3GPP
  • Hands-on work style, teamwork skills, autonomous working methods and quick understanding
  • Good knowledge of English – spoken and written
  • Ability to understand complex problems and develop possible solutions
  • Interest in crossover between wireless communications and aviation is highly appreciated
